尊敬的女士们、先生们：

  我谨以中华人民共和国卫生部部长和国际传统医药大会（北京 2000）主席的名义，欢迎您参加国际传统医药大会（北京 2000）。

  传统医药学是人类文明的重要组成部分，在人类社会发展的历史长河中，它曾为世界各民族的繁衍和昌盛做出过重要贡献；今天，它在人类的医疗保健中仍然发挥着应有的作用。世界卫生组织非常重视传统医药学在世界卫生保健事业中的应用，致力推进世界各国传统医药学的发展。一些国家在传统医药学的医疗、教学、研究、应用方面也达到了一个新的水平，为人民的健康做出了贡献。中国政府一贯重视同各国进行传统医药领域的交流与合作，积极促进传统医药学在新世纪卫生工作中的应用与发展。我们召开世界传统医药大会的目的，就是要加强各国政府间的合作，促进各国传统医药界的团结，进一步推动世界传统医药学的健康发展。

  由中华人民共和国国家中医药管理局与世界卫生组织共同发起的国际传统医药大会（北京 2000），将是世纪之交国际传统医药界一次继往开来的学术盛会，它既是对本世纪传统医药学术成就的检阅，又是对新世纪传统医药学发展的展望。不难预料，随着传统医药学的应用和发展，21世纪的人类卫生保健事业必将展现出新的面貌。让我们衷心祝愿国际传统医药大会（北京 2000）获得圆满成功！

Ladies and Gentlemen:

In the name of the Minister of the Ministry of Health of the People’s Republic of China and the President of the International Congress on Traditional Medicine (Beijing 2000), I would like to welcome you to attend the Congress.

Traditional medicine is an important component of the human civilization. In the history of the human and social development, it has made significant contributions to the growth and prosperity of all nations of the world. Today it is still playing a due role in the people’s medical and health care service. The World Health Organization has attached a great importance to the application of traditional medicine in the world health care cause, and has dedicated itself to advance the development of traditional medicine in different countries. In some countries, medical treatment, education, research and application of traditional medicine have reached a new level and made contributions to the people’s health. The Chinese government has been consistently attaching a great importance to the exchange and cooperation of traditional medicine among countries, and positively promoting the application and development of traditional medicine in the new century. The purpose of this Congress is to enhance the cooperation among the governments of different countries, promote the unity of the traditional medicine circles of various countries, and further the healthy development of the world traditional medicine.

The International Congress on Traditional Medicine (Beijing 2000), which is cosponsored by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine of the People’s Republic of China and the World Health Organization, will be a grand gathering in the traditional medicine field at the turning point of the century. It will be a review of the academic achievements in this century and also provide a vision for the traditional medicine development in the new coming century. There is no doubt that with the application and development of traditional medicine, the people’s health care of the 21^st century will turn to a new chapter. Let us whole-heartedly wish the International Congress on Traditional Medicine (Beijing 2000) a full success.
